Nearly a quarter of New Yorkers said they are unlikely to take a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available, according to a new poll.

The poll, released Tuesday by the Siena College Research Institute, found that 24 percent of 803 New York state voters said they would either probably not or definitely not take a COVID-19 vaccine if approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Meanwhile, the survey showed 35 percent said they definitely would take the vaccine, and 34 percent said they would probably take it.

As of Wednesday morning, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University reported 34,362 coronavirus deaths so far in New York State, the worst in the country.

Nationwide, the number of new COVID-19 cases has skyrocketed to all-time highs recently, averaging more than 170,000 a day, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
